A good water filter or purifier comes in handy when you are in the mountains. You NEVER should drink straight from a natural water source unless you are in a life and death situation. And even then you should consider all of your options. Unlike chemical water treatments, with a water filter you can drink the water immediately and you don't have any nasty iodine aftertaste. Water purifiers use chemicals to kill bacteria that can give you diseases such as giardia.
